徐海东一生中,接待过不少记者,斯诺是他最难忘的一个人。 1936年6月,中国工农红军经过长征胜利到达陕北,美国记者埃德加·斯诺怀着“探寻红色中国”的愿望,经西安秘密地来到陕北苏区。他访问了毛泽东,访问了许多红军将领。在他写的《西行漫记》中,是这样描绘和徐海东会面的: 一天早晨我到彭德怀的司令部去,发现他有好几个部下在那里,正好开完会。他们请我进去,开了一只西瓜。我们围桌而坐,淘气地在炕上吐起瓜子来。我注意到有一个我以前没见过的年轻指挥员。彭德怀看见我瞧着他,便开玩笑说,
