The console and console marketplace is an important marketing strategy for 3DfxInteractive. 3Dfx’s graphics chip for game consoles attracted many PC game developers to develop game software that supports the chip. On September 2, graphics chip maker 3Dfx filed a lawsuit against Sega with the court. This is a response to the cancellation of Sega Enterprises’ plans to use 3Dfx’s graphics chip in next-generation gaming consoles. 3Dfx’s lawsuit accused Sega Enterprises and Sega USA of breaching contracts, unfairly competing and threatening to misappropriate trade secrets. NEC has also been accused of hindering the performance of 3Dfx’s contracts.
