Thornton Wilder’s Journey to: The Nine Deaths is a dramatized allegory featuring grand historical narratives. After analyzing the allegory rhetoric of the play “intends to say ”, this article points out that the inherent uncertainty of the whole play is the need of realizing the independence of the modern allegory. Wilder deliberately uses a mix of styles to achieve dialogue with the pre-classic text. This article demonstrates the openness of this satirical historical parable through the similarities and differences in the acceptance of “Nine Deaths in Different Cultures and Times” and points out that this kind of ambivalence is different from the nihilistic text epistemology in post-modern allegories.
