中英《南京条约》签订后,香港岛成为英国殖民地,为了加强防御,清政府1847年在香港岛对面兴建了九龙寨城,与维多利亚城遥望对峙。《北京条约》签订后,把九龙半岛界限街以南部份由永远租用改为永久割让,纳入香港殖民地。寨城与英界的直线距离不到四百米,但驻有清军水师部队。1898年,英国强行租借时属新安县(今深圳市)的新界地区时,没有把九龙寨城划入租借范围,但随后英国将寨城的清兵赶走。寨城是中国领土,
After the Sino-British Treaty of Nanking was signed, Hong Kong Island became a British colony.
