薛宝钗具有强烈的经济意识,她深知钱的作用,权的重要,懂得如何用钱,懂得如何论事权贵,在她身上集中地体现了商人功利性、自私性、依附性,投机性的表质。此外在人生的价值取向上选择做有才的淑女,群芳之冠。因此她身上形成了卫道士的面孔与骨子里商人铜臭气的结合,宝钗身上的个性特征反映了晚明清初时期商人儒化现象,宝钗这一形象的审美意义就在于此。
