The side chains of β-sitosterol (Ib) were cleaved with Mycobacterium vaccae 209-20 to obtain the? 4-androstene-3,17-dione (II) and a small amount of? 1.4 ) -androstene-3,17-dione (III). The yield of product II was 32%.
