“这的确是我有生以来最美妙壮观而又最难以忘怀的一次旅行啊!”谈到对中国的访问,惠勒教授兴奋极了,他似乎又看到了西安秦陵挖掘上千个兵马俑的宏大场面,又听到了那泛舟扬子、穿越三峡时的轮船的汽笛声……。他深情地说:“远在40年前,我就开始研究中国,读有关中国的书,与朋友们谈中国。然而,这次访问中国后,我却感到我必须再读40年,再研究40年,再和朋友们谈40年,才能真正理解在这短暂的访问中我所看到的一切!”……这是1982年春天的一个下午。在惠勒教授的办公室里,美国德克萨斯大学物理系的中国研究生陈平、邓屯生、陈昌烨、张天蓉拜访这位当代著名的理论物理学家、优秀的教师和思想家约翰·惠勒的情景。由于对中国的文化遗产和哲学思想有浓厚的兴趣和深刻的了解,惠勒先生的谈话自然就从他对中国的访问开始了:
“This is indeed one of the most wonderful, spectacular and unforgettable trips ever made in my life!” Speaking of his visit to China, Professor Wheeler was very excited. He seemed to have seen the magnificent scene of thousands of Terracotta Army dug in Xian Qinling , Heard the boat whistle that flooded the Yangtze, across the Three Gorges. He said with deep feeling: “As early as 40 years ago, I started to study China, read books about China and talked with my friends about China. However, after my visit to China, I felt I had to read for another 40 years and study again 40 years and then talking to my friends for 40 years before really understanding what I have seen during this brief visit! ”... This is an afternoon of the spring of 1982. At Wheeler’s office, Chen Ping, Deng Tunsheng, Chen Changye and Zhang Tianrong, Chinese graduate students from the Department of Physics of the University of Texas visit the well-known contemporary theoretical physicist and outstanding teacher and thinker John Wheeler scene. Due to his deep interest and deep understanding of China’s cultural heritage and philosophical thinking, Mr. Wheeler’s talk naturally started with his visit to China:
