The use of microprocessors in marine instrumentation helps to improve instrument performance and reduce costs. In this case, storing the data measured by the instrument in the microprocessor’s memory is a good way to record the data. To use this approach to form a self-contained marine instrument, the microprocessors used require low power consumption. This article describes a low-power processor. The microprocessor chip MC146805E2 used has a very low power “WAIT” state and a very low power “STOP” state. The circuit also uses other measures to reduce power consumption. The single-chip microprocessor measuring 95 x 150 mm has 8K bytes of memory, an external timer and a standard RS-232 interface. The author has developed a self-contained temperature recorder based on this microprocessor. This work was especially gratefully acknowledged by Dr A. Bradley, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute.
