北京延庆野鸭湖今冬迎来一批批南迁的候鸟。这些上百种过万只候鸟经过几年来的选择和比较,逐渐延长了在野鸭湖的栖息和中转时间,有的还把这里当成了它们越冬的家园。毗邻康西草原的野鸭湖,是北京地区范围内很典型、特点很突出的人工次生湿地,有湿地保护面积9000公顷,约合13万亩。由于湿地环境适合鸟类生存,加之延庆县多年来对该地坚持不懈的环境建设,在野鸭湖栖息和留存的鸟类越来越多。从1996年起,在每年春天,都有数十只到几百只为数不等的天鹅,在野鸭湖畔翩翩起舞;而在每年的秋冬季节,大量候鸟南迁途经野鸭湖时,也延长了在这块栖息地和中转地的停留时间。目前,在野鸭湖自然保护区,记录观察到的鸟类就有180种,其中较常见的鸟类有148种。在这些鸟中有国家一级鸟类5种:黑鹳、白鹳、大鸨、金雕和中华秋沙鸭;还有游隼、灰鹤、苍鹰等国家二级鸟类7种。2000年,野鸭湖被评为北京市市级湿地鸟类自然保护区后,环境保护的力度进一步加大,生态环境更加优越,也更加适合鸟类生存,灰鹤和大雁等候鸟干脆把过冬的家安在了野鸭湖,野鸭湖真正成了鸟的乐园。首都师范大学鸟类专家高武教授认为,大量候鸟在野鸭湖地区延长栖息时间或者过冬,并不偶然,可以觅食、饮水和隐蔽是出现这种情况的根本原因。由
