铜镜在我国古代文献史籍中常被称为鉴。鉴即盛水的盆子,上古时期,人们用它来鉴容。《楚辞·九辩》:“今修饰面窥镜兮。”已明确称作镜,并指出了它妆饰整容的用途。到了宋代,铜镜又被称作照子。此期,在镜背装饰上还出现了一批独具风采的人物故事题材。岐山县博物馆收藏的宋代柳毅传书故事镜和金代许由洗耳故事镜便是这类题材的代表,具有一定的历史、艺术和文学价值。
