新华日报原是抗日战争时期找党在国民党统治区创办的唯一公开发行的报纸。毛泽东同志一直十分重视和关心这张报纸,特别是南京解放后,曾三次为新华日报题写报头,勉励新华日报的工作人员办好这张具有光荣传统的党报。新华日报在南京的出版,是在党中央和毛泽东同志的关怀下得以实现的。早在1937年国共第二次合作开始后,党中央就提出在南京出版新华日报的计划,但未能实现。尔后,新华日报于1938年1月11日在武汉创刊。不久武汉沦陷,又于同年10月25日在重庆继续出版。抗日战争胜利后,党中央决定将新华日报总馆迁往上海,在南京出版新华日报晚刊,重庆的新华
Xinhua Daily was originally the only publicly available newspaper for the party founded during the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression in the KMT ruling zone. Comrade Mao Tse-tung has always attached great importance to and cares about this newspaper. In particular, after the liberation of Nanjing, he once made a headword for the Xinhua Daily and encouraged the staff of Xinhua Daily to run this gloriously traditional party newspaper. The publication of Xinhua Daily in Nanjing was realized with the care of the party Central Committee and Comrade Mao Tse-tung.
