美国儒学作为海外儒学之重要支脉,其形成与发展呈现出明显的阶段性。第一阶段:汉学研究的兴起时期;第二阶段:美国汉学研究的开展阶段;第三阶段:汉学与“中国学”的分化与并容时期;第四阶段:美国儒学研究的纵深发展;第五阶段:后现代时期的美国儒学的新动向。仔细梳理这种阶段性可以发现,美国儒学的发展透显出由汉学而儒学进而哲学的理路。而且,参照“中国哲学”学科在中国形成所引发的“哲学在中国”与“中国的哲学”问题而言,可以说,美国儒学史是由“儒学在美国”到“美国的儒学”的历程,而这一历程的实现缘于儒学亦可以解答美国社会的哲学问题。
