钱穆从儒家的道德本体论来看待中国文学艺术的本质及其作用。他认为:文学、艺术属历史文化的第三层面,即精神层面。他提出了文学即人生、文学即心学的著名观点,强调中国文化诗学对于人生的重要性,同时指出中国文学的精神在于道德修养和情趣意境。在中国传统艺术中,他最推崇音乐艺术,他认为音乐较之其他艺术形式境界更高,最能表现人心。钱穆的艺术思想是他的人文主义精神的充分体现。
Qian Mu Treats the Essence and Function of Chinese Literature and Art from Confucian Moral Ontology. He believes that literature and art belong to the third level of history and culture, that is, spiritual level. He put forward the famous viewpoints of literature, life and literature, that emphasizes the importance of Chinese cultural poetics to life. At the same time, he points out that the spirit of Chinese literature lies in morals and sentiments. In Chinese traditional art, he most admired the art of music. He considered music to be higher than any other art form and could best express his feelings. Qian Mu’s artistic thought is a full manifestation of his humanism.
