Recent studies show that many anti-inflammatory agents have the role of scavenging hydroxyl radicals. The anti-inflammatory agent ibuprofen prevented the formation of iron-mediated oxides and lipid peroxides; 5-aminosalicylic acid inhibited the formation of hydroxyl radicals in the fenton process. Benzoate, cimetidine, beta-blockers, and drugs that reduce calcium metabolism also have a hydroxyl radical scavenging effect.
