WES systems are widely used in the world to predict wheeled off-road vehicles passing on soft ground. WES is the U.S. Army Corps’s Voyages test station. From the beginning of World War II, after decades of development of this prediction system, it is simple and straightforward to summarize the relevant mechanical properties of the ground using conical penetration measurements. But what about its reliability? In order to investigate this important issue, a test was made on a clay and three kinds of sand using a tire wheel. The test results are consistent with the WES on clay but clearly disagreeable on the sand, exposing the problems with this system. The article analyzes the causes of the system problems and discusses.
