北京附近的长城遗址,尤以奇特险峻的金山岭长城更值得一游。金山岭长城位于北京密云县与河北省滦平县交界的燕山山脉之中,金山岭长城段西起龙峪口,东至望京楼(包括东段司马台水门),全长10.5公里。沿线有大小关隘5处,67座敌楼,2座烽火台。始建于明万历三年(公元1576年)。现存的金山岭长城多处可见明朝大将戚继光指挥建造时留下的诗文、碑记和历史遗迹。1988年经国务院批准成为全国重点文物保护单位。这一带山峦起伏,多险峰峻岭,山高谷深,长城沿高峰低岭之间蜿蜒伸展,如苍龙腾空,跌宕起伏,崇山峻岭,看不到头,望不断尾,气势磅礴。山上谷间,树木茂密,植被完好。金山岭一年四季风景各异具有无限魅力,春天百花争妍,满谷幽香;夏季一片翠绿,浓荫生凉;秋季五彩缤纷,果实垂挂;冬天红妆素裹,分外妖娆,一派北国风光。
