元艺术学又可称为艺术学学,是对于艺术学本身的“研究的研究”。“元艺术学”的学科名称于1988年《艺术学的构想》一文中正式提出,至今已有20年。近来有学者对元艺术学的研究是否必要提出质疑。本文认为,如果在美学及文学理论领域开展元研究无须怀疑的话,那么,艺术学作为一门有自己的特定研究对象、广阔学术空间和美好学术前景的人文学科,对于它的“元研究”即“元艺术学”研究,其必要性也是无须怀疑的。元艺术学的探讨有两个层面:一是对本学科的自觉的反思精神,这是每一位艺术学研究者的“基本功”;另一是关于元艺术学的系统的学科性探讨,仍很有必要。而元艺术学研究的根本目的,在于更好地阐释艺术。因此,应努力避免为元研究而元研究、使之沦为空洞的、无内容的思维的游戏。
