Canadian writer Alice Monroe, in her short story collection Escape, uses delicate brushwork and fiction to tell the story of the fleeing of marginal town women. They either flee their families or flee from marriages and sexual relations or from less and less satisfactory self. However, the result of the flight is either destructive or disappointing. Karla, the heroine of the novel “Escape,” was anxious to flee but was scared of an unknown future and chose to return on her way to escape. Monroe, with his profound experience of life, nuancedly captures the accidental moments in his life one may flee, highlighting the impermanence of destiny, giving enlightenment and stimulating thinking.
