庐山庐山位于江西省九江市,濒临鄱阳湖,雄峙长江南岸。为’三山五岳’中之’三山’之一。公元四世纪,高僧慧远在庐山建东林寺,结白莲社,首创观像念佛的净土法门,开创佛教中国化的进程。慧远由此被尊为净土宗初祖;东林寺成为净土宗祖庭。慧远(334-416),雁门楼烦(今山西崞县)人,俗姓贾。十三岁时游学许昌、洛阳,博通六经、老庄之学。二十一岁时偕弟慧持于太行恒山(今河北曲阳西北)听高僧道安讲《般若经》,颇有领悟,感叹’儒道九流皆糠秕’,遂与弟俱投道安座下,剃度出家。
