Multiple myeloma (MM)s incidence and mortality rate are two fold greater in blacks than in whites.We hypothesized that the difference associated with race could be related with the Duffy blood group,since this blood group is a receptor for cytokines and the phenotypic profile is different in blacks than in whites.Close association of Duffy antigens with cytokines and the strong effect of cytokines in multiple myeloma (MM) pathogenesis encouraged us to research the Duffy phenotype in patients with MM.We studied the Duffy phenotype in 40 patients with multiple myeloma (MM),20 patients with acute leukemia (as a control group),and 20 healthy blood bank donors from reticulocytes.To compare our data with other study population results,we designed second blood bank group was consisted of 40 donors in which Duffy phenotype was studied from mature peripheral erythrocytes.The Duffy a+b+ was significantly higher in the MM group and unexpectedly in Leukemia group than in the two blood bank groups (p=0.000).Duffy phenotype profile was found to change in MM disease and Leukemia.Our last hypothesis is DARC (Duffy Antigens Receptor for Chemokine) can be target for treatment of MM and Leukemia.
