A human T cell retrovirus (HTLV-III, LAV) has been isolated from AIDS or AIDS-related complex (ARC) patients and asymptomatic patients. This virus is associated with the development of AIDS and ARC and appears to be the etiologic agent necessary for these syndromes. However, due to HTLV-III infection in the individual
