原襄樊市市委书记孙楚寅,因涉嫌经济犯罪,2002年12月初被“双规”,直到2005年8月,才被一审判处有期徒刑17年。2005年9月,经中共中央批准,中共湖北省委常委会决定,给予孙楚寅开除党籍、开除公职处分。孙楚寅一案审理如此之久,原因之一是在查处孙案过程中,不断发现涉案的其他党员干部。2003年10月,有媒体称:“湖北省纪委透露,正在查办的孙楚寅案牵涉领导干部74人,其中该市相关单位、县市‘一把手’30余人,厅级干部11人。”后来陆续公开处理的党员干部达29人,襄樊官场遭遇空前剧烈的“地震”。
