US Medical News, Vol. 14, No. 20 (1981) Stony Brook, U.S.A. According to Morton AMeyers, of Stony Brook Medical School at State University of New York, the more commonly used bendable Fiber endoscopy improves the diagnosis of gastrointestinal disorders, but also increases the mortality associated with many upper gastrointestinal perforations and endoscopy. In a survey report by the American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, the overall complication rate of endoscopy was 1.32 / 1,000. The incidence of esophageal dilatation complications was 4.25 to 18.4 / 1,000 times. In addition to perforation, major complications identified during the investigation include bleeding due to biopsy and aspiration, myocardial infarction, cardiac arrest and arrhythmia, and cessation of respiration.
