According to “Nature” magazine, as the recession has begun to spread from western countries to Asia, Japan’s major industrial departments for research and development funding showed signs of stagnation or even decline after five consecutive years of rise. Although there have been recent reports that the Japanese industry now invests more in research and development than the U.S. industry, the “world first” title does not seem likely to last long. Nature magazine lists some relevant statistics. A survey of Japan’s five largest electronics companies, Hitachi, Toshiba, Fujitsu, Sony and NEC showed that the 1992 research and development funds of these companies will remain at the level of the previous year. R & D investment from another electronics company, Mitsubishi Electric, will be even lower than last year’s level.
