宗白华是现代美学理论研究的重要代表人物之一,他受到西方生命哲学的吸引,并中西融合后将纳入自己的思想体系中,形成中国式的“生命美学”。在其艺术学和美学的研究过程中,同样作为“诗哲”的同事兼好友新儒家代表人物方东美,在于其深入的交往下,宗白华的生命美学思想和理论体系才能不断得以发展。方东美的“生生之德”文化哲学同样也是受到了生命哲学的启发才得以形成,但呈现出不同的美学风格。方宗两人共同致力于发展中国传统美学精神,并中西结合进一步将中国气化哲学和传统儒家哲学推向国际舞台。
