The International Tin Research Institute (ITRI) reported that the global tin supply gap in 2014 will expand to 12,400t from 7,400t in 2013, mainly due to a pick-up in the electronics industry. Peter Kettle, ITRI’s marketing director, said the widening supply gap has led to an increase in the international tin price to $ 26,000 / t in 2014. Indonesia’s supply has been volatile as the country demanded that all export trade must pass through the Indonesian Commodity Exchange and Commodity Exchange (ICDX) to suspend illegal mining and support prices. Kettle pointed out that more stringent control in Indonesia coupled with the improvement in consumption means that the market will be re-emerged short of demand, in fact, may be in excess of supply for five consecutive years. No new mines are expected to be put into production in 2014, and most new projects are in their infancy
