Sheard, a soil scientist at the University of Guelph, Canada, used radioactive phosphorus to identify that because of the phosphate fertilizer that was applied sideways by an inch, plants absorbed less than 15 days after sowing. In a plot of alfalfa and broccoli he used half a dozen of phosphate slurries two inches below the seed and the other half a inch horizontally to the side. After sowing for 15 days, the seedlings growing directly on the phosphate fertilizer, which contains half of the phosphorus, comes from the application of phosphate fertilizer
