The number of medicines available to consumers varies widely from one country to another. In some countries the market may have as many as 30,000 trade names, while in other countries it may be as little as 2,000. In order to be effective and inexpensive, some public health officials have urged third world countries Limit the production of drugs and the procurement of relatively few types of products. They suggested creating a list of “essential” medicines, including only those products that have been well-established, and public health officials are thinking about taking the list as a whole and may adapt to the needs of the majority of the world’s population.
