针对我国经济建设发展对石油天然气的迫切需求,在进一步进行石油天然气勘探的同时,科技界为改变已开发油气田因采收率不高而致使60%以上石油难以有效开采的现状,1988年以来,已逐渐形成油气储集层地球物理分支学科的研究轮廓。为了进一步贯彻经济建设必须依靠科学技术,科技工作必须面向经济建设的方针,我国学者在预研先行、充分酝酿的基础上,国家自然科学基金委员会会同中国科学院,中国石油天然气总公司、大庆石油管理局,按照国家自然科学基金重大项目的评审、立项程序,于1992年设立并共同资助了“陆相薄互层油储地球
