Hu Shi is no only one of the leaders of modern Chinese literaturemovement but also an outstanding forerunner in the history of comparativestudy of literature in China. His viewpoint of comparative study of litera-ture is related closely to his culturally deep anxiety, tha is, he wants torealize the ideal of Chinese Renaissance and modern nation by advocatingcomparative method of study. Meanwhile he lays great stress on study ofliterature, which means that the main purpose of comparative sutdy of lit-erature is to discover problems, to study problems, and solve problems,in Chinese literature, and at the sam time, to suggest new coneptions,new forms and new methods of Western literature, in order to developmodern Chinese literature.
