In early July, the Macintosh and the desktop market, which sold for less than a thousand dollars, were strongly motivated by Motorola’s RISC microprocessor unit and Cyrix. Motorola announced a new 250MHz PowerPC 604e microprocessor chip, while Cyrix announced the 166MHz and 180MHz MediaGX integrated processor chips. The 250MHz PowerPC 604e is the first of its kind to be manufactured using a 0.25-micron manufacturing process from Motorola.
