我与萧乾是在1991年认识的。他是我国著名的作家、记者、文学翻译家,曾长期从事编辑记者工作。二战期间是《大公报》派往欧洲战场的的随军记者,曾以随盟军登陆诺曼底和随美军抢渡莱茵河等重要战场报道,赢得了声誉。晚年他和志同道合的老伴文洁若(文学翻译家)合作翻译被喻为“天书”的爱尔兰的意识流小说家乔伊斯著的《尤利西斯》一书,由于原著的文字艰奥,萧乾说从翻译难度来看,不亚于攀登喜马拉雅山。此书花了4年多的时间译成,1994年由译林出版社出版,受到国内外出版界的广泛关注。 Xiao Qian and I met in 1991. He is a famous writer, reporter and literary translator in China. He has long been engaged in editorial work of reporters. During World War II, “Ta Kung Pao,” a war correspondent dispatched to the European battlefield, won the prestigious honor of landing on Normandy with the Allied Forces and reporting on major battlefields such as crossing the Rhine with the U.S. military. In his later years, he and his like-minded partner, Wenjie Jie (literary translator), co-translated “Ulysses,” an Irish consciousness-flow novelist Joyce, Austria, Xiao Qian said that from the translation perspective, no less than climbing the Himalayas. This book has been translated into more than 4 years, published by Yilin Press in 1994, has been widely concerned by publishers at home and abroad.
