本文根据黄天树先生对殷墟卜辞分类断代的研究,确定了卜辞国族名称“周”的时代属殷墟二期,并根据文献记载古公亶父迁岐的时间相当于殷墟三期,指出殷墟卜辞“周”不会是姬姓周人。然后根据王恩田先生的考释,用古文字学的方法,将甲骨、金文中表示国族名称的两种写法的“周”相联系;又据张懋镕先生姬周贵族不用族徽和日名的说法,指出西周金文中的“周”族也不是姬姓,而是妘姓,此妘姓之周应与殷墟卜辞中的“周”为同一族属。最后指出,同族氏称号而不同族姓是先秦历史上常见的现象。
