1984年.冯至在《新文学初期的继承与借鉴》一文中指出,关于“五四”新文学的开始.向来就有两种看法,一是继承和发展了中国进步文学的传统,一是受到西方文学的影响。他认为:“这两种看法各自有它的理由,但不能只强调一方面而忽视另一方面.把两者结合起来.才符合实际。可是先后次序要明确一下,那就是先有了西方文学的影响.新文学才更好地继承和发展了中国文学
