AT & T and Japan’s KDD plan to build a new trans-Pacific cable system, the PCT-5, by 1996, which will connect the United States and Japan. Multiple pairs of fibers in the TPC-5 will operate at a code rate of 2.4 Gb / s. The planned system will use an erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) to maintain broadband business. According to a spokesman for AT & T, EDFA claims that the EDFA is more advantageous than an electrical repeater because its structure does not need to change as the code rate or modulation scheme changes. The TPC-5 system will be able to transmit about 600,000 simultaneous telephones, eight times the capacity of fiber optic systems currently deployed. Alternate system
