Bombesin is a potent stimulator of pancreatic exocrine and its mechanism of action is unknown, possibly mediated by cholecystokinin or directly associated with specific receptors on pancreatic acinar cells. Serum immunoreactive trypsin (IRT) is an organ-specific pancreatic protein that can be measured by radioimmunoassay. IRT is considered a reliable indicator of pancreatic exocrine function and is not affected by cholecystokinin or cerulein.
