黄炎培(1878-1965),中国近现代民主革命家、教育家。号楚南,字任之,笔名抱一。江苏川沙县(今属上海市)人。早年在家乡任塾师。1901年入上海南洋公学特班,受业于蔡元培。1902年应江南乡试中举人,年底返故里办川沙小学堂。旋因鼓吹反清被捕入狱,获保出狱后赴日本。1905年秋经蔡元培介绍加入“同盟会”。归国后创办、主持上海广明小学、广明师范讲习所、浦东中学,并执教于上海城东女学、丽泽书院。历任川沙县视学、劝学所总董、江苏学务总会评议员、江苏教育总会常
