In 1957, the author put forward the suggestion based on the earthquake damage of brick chimney: Vertical seismic force plays an important role. In recent years, after analyzing the damage caused by many structures, the traditional view that the horizontal seismic force plays a decisive role is wrong. In fact, the vertical seismic force plays a major role [4,5,6,15]. The same conclusion has been reached after the analysis of seismic damage of some bridges in [8].
