兰州铁路局管内的包兰线、干武线、兰新线和青藏线、宝中线均穿越戈壁、沙漠、盐滩等地质条件恶劣的地带。流沙埋没线路、堵塞桥涵、道床板结和不匀衡拱车道经常发生,流沙使钢轨及配件加速磨耗、锈蚀严重,极大地威胁着线路畅通和行车安全。为此,自50年代以来,铁路局组织有关科研部门对全局500km沙害严重地段,本着“科研引路,因地制宜,就地取材,因害设防,防治结合,综合治理”的原则,先后进行了大规模的防沙、治沙科学研究和治沙工程施工,流沙基本得到了治理,确保了铁路运输安全畅通。
