乾隆三十九年(1774年)十一月二十五日这一天,紫禁城内妆扮得光彩夺目,重重宫阙悬灯结彩,慈宁宫内外,更是热闹非凡,从那里散发出缕缕香烟、声声鼓乐,悠悠然飘越宫墙,一直传到隆宗门以至前三殿一带。原来,这一天是乾隆帝的生母孝圣皇太后的八十三岁寿辰,乾隆帝在慈宁宫中为母后行祝寿礼。在中和韶乐的演奏声中,皇太后升座了。皇帝、皇后、嫔、妃、王子、公主、王公、福晋、命妇们依次向皇太后行大礼,最后轮到文武百官按班行礼祝寿。
