法国在联机检索和数据库的生产方面虽然起步比较迟缓,但近年来在法国国家科学研究中心以及各大学、高等专业学校和博物馆等公共教育机构和商业机构的共同努力下,数据库生产事业取得了长足的发展。就数据库数量而言,1986年已达到320种。其中已经投入运行和正在研制中的科学技术领域的数据库为141种,占总量的44%,而且,科技数据库中的绝大部分是属于生命科学、以及地球、海洋与空间科学领域的。已经正式提交使用的科技数据库大约占50%强。法国数据库投入的人力较少,一般在1.5至3人左右,平均为2人。从地区分布来讲,集中于法国巴黎、以及罗纳。阿尔卑斯、洛雷恩和阿尔卑斯·蓝岸省四个地区内。这些数据库的绝大多数是近几年才建成的,从数据库的种类看,以事实型数据库为主。这些数据库一般经主计算机或计算机中心实施联机情报检索。数据库的CD—ROM技术亦已处于研究实施阶段。
