Previous studies have shown that loneliness is one of the major causes of grief for people over 60, and that their quality of life is degraded. Now, a new study by U.S. researchers shows that loneliness can increase the death rate by 10%. Researchers at the University of California, Los Angeles, conducted a study of 1604 elderly people with an average age of 71 years. When asked if they felt lonely, 43.2% of respondents said they sometimes feel lonely. After 6 years of follow-up, people who feel lonely have a mortality rate of 22.8%, while most people have a 14.2% mortality rate.
