The ability of lasers to record optical data has been well understood for years, but breakthroughs at the technological level must be explored in many ways. Philips made these breakthroughs well by developing in parallel with the original video length demo system. “The only thing we need is a breakthrough in diode lasers, which comes from the company's semiconductor capabilities, coupled with matching recording materials,” said Dr. K.Bulthuis from the Phillips Lab. .
