In December 2012, Nova Scotia, Canada, completed the acquisition of the entire stake in Bowater Mersey Paper Co., Ltd., a producer of Resolute Forest Products, and plans to turn the company into a clean energy, bioenergy and forestry innovation research center. Bowater Mersey was previously a joint venture of Resolute Forest Products (51%) and The Washington Post Group (49%), a former Mersey newsprint mill located in Brooklyn, Nova Scotia, among other connections Assets, including private lands, Oakhill sawmill and Brooklyn Power Company.
