A rare hyphomycete isolated from Korean pine forests in 2006 (isolate CNU 120806). The fungus has two spores, but only the spore-shaped spores can adhere to the nematode worm and infect nematodes. The fungus consumes the nematode to nourish and grow nematode worms, form new spores, and then undergo a new infection cycle. Based on morphological and molecular biological features, the strain was identified as Esteya vermicola, the first parasitic endophyte of Pine wood nematode that has been reported. Due to its high infectivity, it is hoped that it will become a biocontrol agent against the devastating wilt disease. Bioassays showed that E.vermicola CBS115803 could infect almost all of the pine wood nematodes in 4 to 5 days, due to the production of more moon-shaped spores. The study also shows that the application of the bacteria formula has the prevention and control of pine wilt disease prevention commercial prospects.
