Excess LDL may be a good thing for a patient with leukemia, which used to be considered “bad cholesterol.” Leukemic cells are known to have increased LDL uptake in acute myeloid leukemia (AML) patients in vitro. Now Swedish researchers have shown that in vivo, AML patients also increased LDL uptake. Therefore, LDL can be used as a vehicle for lipophilic cytotoxic drugs targeting leukemia cells. Researchers at Karolinska Hospital in Stockholm, Sweden, and the University of Hudgens injected 14 newly-diagnosed adult AML patients with 14 C-sucrose-labeled LDL, and half of the radiolabeled sucrose remained in the fine form when 14 C-sucrose LDL was degraded
