In the post-May 4th era,Liu Bannong,who,once a pioneer in the Literary Reform Movement of the May 4th era,distanced himself increasingly from the sphere of politics and turned to academic research instead.People who took a critical stance about his choice thought that he fell behind from a soldier to a recluse.This paper,however,disagrees with this kind of opinion and insists that Liu’s choice has logic of its own.It suggests that although Liu’s choice has some distance from the so-called the spirit of the time,but it also centres on the value of individual.From that perspective,Liu’s choice should be understood sympathetically.
