在中国,有关虎的成语和寓言广为流传,随处可见。如“虎视眈眈”“虎背熊腰”“谈虎色变”“虎略龙韬”“虎落平川”“虎口拔牙”“藏龙卧虎”“龙腾虎跃”等。民间认为虎可以驱逐邪恶,趋吉避凶。据《山海经·海外篇》记载:“若害人之鬼,以苇索缚之,射以桃弧,投虎食也。”《风俗通》也记载:“虎者阳物,百兽之长,能击鸷,性食魑魅者也。”所有这些都反映了人们对虎既畏惧又崇拜的复杂心理状态。虎在人们的心目中,是威武、勇猛、雄健和生气勃勃的象征。虎以它鲜明的特点,而在人们的记忆中留下了难以磨灭的形象。人们除了用语言文字描述虎之外,也用艺术手段来塑造虎。在出土的商代青铜器及玉器中,就有虎的形象和以虎作为装饰的。

Tiger in the minds of people, is a symbol of mighty, brave, vigorous and dynamic. Tiger with its distinctive features, but in people’s memories left an indelible image. In addition to using language to describe tigers, people are also using art to shape tigers. In the unearthed Shang Dynasty bronze and jade, there is the tiger’s image and tiger as a decoration.
