7. Maintenance spare parts The third-generation maintenance management has proved to have made important new developments in the area of spare parts management. The first new development is the reduction of spare parts reserve movements carried out by all industrial sectors to deal with the ever-increasing spare parts reserve costs. This movement is accompanied by a growing awareness that the only reason to store spare parts is to avoid the consequences of non-reserve (this is always dictated by the time required to obtain the spare parts, and often refers to the time from order to delivery). Therefore, determining whether or not to store some spare parts is an important issue that needs to be compared and analyzed based on the reserve costs and the consequences of not storing the spare parts. The RCM’s consequences assessment technology is of great value in solving this problem. The second new development relates to spare parts that must be stored. It is now clear that successful spare parts management requires more than one but three different systems (Figure 6). These include:
