The Kunlun Mountains earthquake in 2001 was an unusual event, resulting in a surface rupture of 400 km in length. Regional broadband recording of this event provides an opportunity to accurately observe the rate of fault rupture during a seismic event and is of great importance to understanding the seismic hazard and understanding seismic physics. The average velocity of rupture propagating over an earthquake fault of 400km in length is 3.7 ~ 3.9km / s, which exceeds the shear wave velocity in the brittle part of the crust. The rupture starts with the Rayleigh wave velocity and then increases to the super shear wave velocity, which may reach 5 km / s after propagation of 100 km.
